4Detailed and Helpful Review *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~  Nov 12, 2011
By nusi9691
I am going to try to give a detailed and helpful review of this Bdellium Basic Essential 7 Piece Antibacterial Makeup Brush Set - Travel Line. Before I start I always think its important in reviews to state what type of makeup you use with the brushes you're reviewing and how you clean them. You could have been doing something wrong and giving the people that read your review a bad impression of the product.

Note: The yellow handles are a much more creamier, milder yellow than in the pictures. I thought it might look too abrasive or like a kid's toy but it doesn't and I actually love it. I'm considering getting more brushes from Bdellium with these yellow handles since they, suprisingly, look very professional. Also I, personally, prefer shorter handled brushes, I just don't see the point of a long handle if you only use and hold the upper half of a brush and I feel the brush is more balanced and I have more control. Sadly, most companies that do have "travel" sized brushes, I feel, don't have great quality ones so I decided to try these on sale for $8.95 + $9.00 shipping to Vancouver, Canada.

For softness reference, I will be comparing the bristles to EcoTools synthetic brushes.

Blush Face Face Antibacterial Makeup Brush #964
-This brush is a nice size overall, but I completely disagree that this is a "blush brush". It is way too big and flimsy for cheeks, but as a powder brush it is very good. Not as soft as I want a powder brush to be. After using the brush quickly and vigorously on my face, I feel a stinging sensation so I have to use this brush softly as I have sensitive, redness prone skin. Washed with diluted Dr. Bronner's Magic Soap, keep its shape after drying. 1-2 bristles fell out when I opened the packaging and there was no unusual smell to this brush.

Foundation Application Antibacterial Makeup Brush #948
-This is a beautiful sturdy brush, well made with synthetic bristle. Very soft. I, personally, don't use this as a foundation brush, I use this for everything but foundation. My favorite thing to use this brush for is applying highlighter all over my face. This does a perfect job for liquid or powder highlighters. This is also perfect for applying liquid, cream or powder blush and then blending with fingers. Washed with the same soap, kept its shape perfectly. No bristles have fallen out and there was no unusual smell ever.

Angled Contouring Face Antibacterial Makeup Brush #942 (White)
-This is a really nice brush, the bristles, ferrule and handle is very proportionate in my opinion if that makes any sense. The whole brush is very balanced. I really like it, the bristles are white, I'm not sure if it is synthetic or natural but its quite soft, not as soft as Ecotools. This brush reminds me of the CoverFx #160 brush but angled, and that's saying a lot. The firmness is perfect, the size for cheeks (blush/contour(cream or powder)) is perfect. Washed with the same soap, outside bristles splayed a little but nothing major, no shedding, no unusual smell.

Tapered Blending Eye Antibacterial Makeup Brush #785
- This brush was the worst disappointment of the set. I was so disappointed, I was hoping it would be similar to the MAC224 but no way, not even close. The shape of the brush is very nice and sturdy but the bristles are just crap! Honestly, there is no use for this brush with these poor quality bristles. The bristles are similar to the Blush brush #964 but much, much worse. The bristles are thick, very scratchy, splayed out and the dome is poorly shaped. Washed with the same soap, is splayed, 1 bristle fell out, no unusual smell.

Shadow Eye Antibacterial Makeup Brush #777
-This is another complete disappointment. Again, the shape of the brush is really balanced and sturdy. If the bristles were softer, which they absolutely are not, this could be a staple brush just like the MAC217 since the shape is similar. I wish that cosmetic brush companies would realized that if you want to make a stiffer brush, the bristles must be soft, either synthetic or natural but soft so they don't drag the skin. This brush is dense and stiff and a good shape for blending on the eye (similar to MAC217) but bristles completely ruin the potential of this brush. Although it can be used to *gently* pat all-over eye color and blend with another brush. Washed with the same soap, 3+ bristles have fallen out, no unusual smell.

Sharp Angled Contour Eye Antibacterial Makeup Brush #763
-This brush is very thin but sturdy and well made. If anything is sharp its the bristles. The brush is too thick and wide and the bristles are very stiff for my taste, okay for smudging eyeliner pencil but feels scratchy on my eye. Don't use it that often. Washed with the same soap, no shedding and no unusual smell.

Precision Lip Liner Antibacterial Makeup Brush #540
-I love this brush. Again, its thin and sturdy and the bristles tiny and stiff but soft like crazy, I think they are taklon bristles like Ecotools. I think everyone needs to have this brush but not for lips! I'll explain what I mean, I watch and follow Professional Makeup Artist Lisa Eldridge on Youtube(lisaeldridgedotcom page)and she uses a different method for foundation and concealer <--videos on Youtube. She applies a light-medium coverage foundation all over the face then she uses a full coverage cream concealer to put on spots/pimples using either a fine eyeliner brush or a small lip brush and pats it in with a finger, since I prefer using the lip brush for concealer, this has been a miracle for me. What a good concept, this little idea and brush has perfected my facial makeup, I use mineral foundation all over and then use CoverFx Full coverage Cream Foundation with this little lip brush and its perfect, since mineral foundation just cannot and will not ever cover spots.

Finally, the brush travel bag/case/holder. For $8.95 just this travel case is worth it, no joke. It is a soft black faux leather material on the outside and a thin light forest green material on the inside with two rows of pockets for brushes. Long/regular sized brushes would only fit on the bottom row while short handled/travel brushes would fit on the top row. Its gorgeous, functional, soft, attractive and great for me since my collection is full of short handled brushes. For the current price $18.95 this brush set is still worth buying, but for $55.oo it is NOT worth buying, so if you can get it on sale, I say buy it, if not than its worth more to just buy the case and "good quality" brushes separately.

3Nice pouch, some brushes are not so great  Oct 28, 2011
By Yarii
For years I've used the Cat Cosmetics Open Sesameow Brush Set as my primary set of make-up brushes. I happen to like short handle brushes not only for travel, but for everyday use. The Cat Cosmetics set costs twice what this set costs and now I can see why, as those brushes are much softer than these.

Not that this bdellium set is all that bad. The price is excellent for the roll-up pouch alone (this set was under $10 when I purchased it, I see now the price has increased a great deal). The pouch is black vinyl with Velcro closure, the inside is a polyester-satiny material with a fold-over panel to protect the brushes. The brushes don't shed at all. As far as them being anti-bacterial, I'm not sure how I could test that, but I always wash my brushes weekly anyhow.

Here is what the Disclaimer on the box says about them being anti-bacterial: All anti-bacterial treatment is limited to the hair bristles. Microbiology testing is done for E.coli or S.aureaus bacteria only. Anti-bacterial protection is not permanent and will dissipate over time and usage.

The blusher brush, the Takelon foundation brush, and the shadow brush are all excellent brushes. The others I can't get excited about. When I first used them, it was like they were stiff and starched. Once I flexed them a few times, they were better. The slanted contour brush is so wiry it hurts my face - after just 5 uses it already has straggler hairs sticking out. I wish there would have been a spoolie brush included, but there is none. Also there is no powder brush, although the blusher brush can be used for that as it's large enough.

This set is Made in China, but not sure what they are made of, some are natural and some are synthetic.

Here are the brushes included in the kit:
#964T AP Blusher - measures 5-1/2" long
#948T Foundation - measures 5" long
#942T Slanted Contour - measures 5-1/2" long
#785T Tapered Blending - measures 5-1/8" long
#777T Shadow - measures 5" long
#763T Small Angle - measures 4-1/2" long
#540T Precision Liner - measures 4-5/8" long

4Nice set!  Dec 09, 2011
By E. Skiver
I see that some are giving the reviewers a "not Helpful" if they are being truthful and a lil' critical. That really ticks me off! These/We reviewers are doing this for YOU....to know what to expect. We take our time, out of our lives, to help and some folks know what to expect. Why do peeps just want to be mean? Geesh! ;)
Ok, so lets start with the positives:
The brushes are well made and feel substantial in my hands.
Their was some shedding upon first few washing with the 964 Powder brush. But nothing too significant.
The brush bag is so awesome!!! Its very soft, well made and rolls up smoothly.
There is enough room to fit about 3 travel/short handled brushes in each slot.
Plus there is also a second slot right under each one and you can fit a skinnier handled brush in it too.
This brush roll is actually worth the price of the set.
948 Foundation is so soft and is very comparable to MAC's version. The size is perfect and the top comes together to allow a seamless application.(It does come with a stiff finish and needs a good washing to get the stuff off)
540 Liner brush can also be a smaller concealer brush or for detailing.
Brow brush is firm and a bit smaller than my MAC 226 brush....which I am very happy about. Makes a great precision brow brush.
777 Shadow brush is like any other shader. Its very very similar to MAC's 213.
942 Contour brush is very much like MAC's 168SE brush that comes with their holiday brush sets. So its obviously not as soft as my full sized MAC 168..but I found this wasn't too scratchy at all.
964 Powder/Blush brush is sooo soft and fluffy. It is shaped like MAC 129....just not as dense. But this one is way way way way softer than MAC's! Yay!

One Negative:
785 Blending eyeshadow brush really sux! Its so course/rough/scratchy/hard! Ugh!(even after washing with MAC's brush shampoo and conditioning it a few times)This one goes to the kids to play with.

But,listen....this one bad apple does "not ruin" this set.
The set is killer!
I just couldn't give this 5 stars because of the one brush.
Wish there were an option for 4.5 stars.
In the end, these rock and I am happy I bought this! :)

5Great product!  Jan 16, 2012
By Carlotta
These brushes are the perfect size! I loved that they were antibacterial and that's why I chose it as a gift for my sister. She absolutely adores makeup and says that all of her products have managed to go on even smoother with these brushes. Also, the case is very nice, and even has enough space for her to put extras like tweezers in there.

5Great set for beginners  Nov 02, 2011
By Andrea Johanne Lena
I've been a makeup fanatic and I was looking for a nice set of makeup brushes for beginners like me. I didn't want to spend too much money on expensive brushes which I might end up regretting if they didn't work as well as I'd hope but this set and brand of brushes are perfect! The bristles are soft and blending the product is easy with these brushes! I recommend this for beginners :) and I would buy more brushes of this brand in the future
